Day 1:
The Coals
“It’s been so long balancing on this high wire, I wanna walk on the coals”
We open this album with a track about doing the thing that scares us, going boldly. Performing wasn’t initially a comfortable thing for me, though I started really young.
When I was about 9, I went to see a music teacher who asked to hear a song of mine. After spending 30 minutes crying, I conceded by letting him stand outside the room and keep the door open while I played a song I’d written on piano.
Shortly after, I played my first performance, at a Halloween themed kids/teen band showcase at a former fire station turned community center. There were a lot of kids there, and I felt very intimidated by the 8th grade indie white boy bands (who acted very similarly to all-grown-up indie white boy bands). But this was a moment in my life where I’m immensely grateful that I went boldly.

Because it was a Halloween show, I dressed up as a tiny Janis Joplin, complete with sunglasses indoors.

My first song on a real stage was Rolling in the Deep by Adele, followed by The Only Exception by Paramore. That’s where this all starts, I suppose.
Studio Bts
‘Confession’ was recorded at Plyrz Studios and produced by GRAMMY Award-winning producer Jim Scott (the Chicks, Tom Petty) in collaboration with GRAMMY Award-winning producer, Davíd Garza!
Each and every day, i’ll be sharing a bit of Behind The Scenes footage from my time at the studio!
Then & Now!
Here’s my performance of The Coals live from the Miami World Center.
Three years before the official music video was dreamt and filmed!
Here’s my performance of The Coals a few months ago on Domingo Live!
Lyrics
I woke up and all I heard was
Drumming in my ear
I turned and saw you next to me, fast asleep
Said, “I gotta get out of here”
Oh baby, it’s nothing personal
Just this fire in my bones
I’ll write a book about it, explain it all to you one day
But for now can you leave me alone
I’m gonna walk on the coals
I’m gonna walk on the coals
I’m gonna walk on the coals
I’m gonna do it real slow
I’m gonna walk on the coals
I gave a coin to an old woman
To help me find my way
She said intuition
Is just calling a spade a spade
Oh, my baby, please me quiet for a sec
Honey, I’m so confused
I need answers
But all I’m getting is jive talk from you
And I wanna settle down like a child in your arms sometimes
But I’m tired, it’s been so long balancing on this high wire
I’m gonna walk on the coals
I’m gonna walk on the coals
I’m gonna walk on the coals
I’m gonna do it real slow
I’m gonna walk on the coals
Moths are drawn to flames
Children play their games
Since the dawn of time
We confuse passion with pain
So now I’m caught up in between
The damage and the dream
So I’m pushing it, pushing it all away
And I’m moving and there’s nothing you can say
I’m gonna walk on the coals
I’m gonna walk on the coals
I’m gonna walk on the coals
I’m gonna do it real slow
I’m gonna walk on the coals
I’m gonna walk on the coals
I’m gonna get me some control
I’m gonna walk on the coals
