Calista Garcia - Diving Into the Depths of Existential Wonder

September 3, 2021: Where do you turn when you feel like an outcast? Some say that’s the basis of rock n’ roll music. Some say you have to be an outcast to truly learn to express yourself. When Calista Garcia moved to Nashville in the fall of 2019, she discovered that she didn’t fit in easily in the local scene. So she dug deep to find meaning. “I got really into philosophy. I listened to a lot of Bob Dylan and read a lot of Sylvia Plath. And whenever I got lonely, I wrote.”
One result is this new single “Deep Blue Diving”, scheduled for release on September 9, 2021. Reminiscent of Tom Petty, Paul Simon, and yes, the Bard, Calista weaves a story of her observations of life around her and explores that inner world we enter when we get lost -- “deep blue diving” with a high-level philosophical musing about the meaning of life while “synchronized swimming in the great primordial soup.” With an acoustic, Americana groove that is a strong throwback to organic folk rock music of old, the B3, harmonica and acoustic guitars build to an energetic romp of musical resilience, leaving the listener feeling satisfied and optimistic.
As Calista aptly puts it:
I wrote "Deep Blue Diving" as an expression of radical optimism. Optimism, not because life is full of sunshine and rainbows, but rather in spite of how tough it can be. We can shake our fists at the sky and ask, “Why, why, why?” while still knowing on some level that everything happens for a reason. We can know that others may try to cut us down for trying to be free, and we can seek our personal freedom and happiness anyway. We can carry all the baggage of our wounds, see the way people have hurt each other again and again, since the very beginning. And we can still find people to love, to trust. We can let down all those walls we’ve built up, because we can still find someone to believe in. Life is duplicitous, but we are whole.
“Deep Blue Diving” is the opening track from her upcoming EP, A Beautiful World, scheduled for release October 29, 2021. This project was co-produced by Calista and Buddy Speir at 38 North Studio in Falls Church VA, and was mixed by Grammy award-winning producer, Jim Scott, in his vintage-equipped Los Angeles studio.
The project is a follow-on to Calista’s debut EP Wild Woman which was self-released in April 2019 to much critical acclaim, garnering a nomination for “Best Roots/Country EP” in the 2020 Independent Music Awards, as well as multiple other nominations and awards. Based in Washington DC, Calista is a 2021 Chris Austin Songwriting Finalist at upcoming Merlefest and is a 2021 “She Is the Music Foundation” Songwriting Fellow.
