August 20, 2021: . . . Sometimes in the throes of turmoil, clarity surfaces. That was the experience of folk-rock singer-songwriter Calista Garcia, as she braced herself in Nashville in the Spring of 2020 for an incoming tornado. At that moment, the one thing Calista wanted was comfort and assurance, which she found in playing one of her favorite Jack Johnson songs over and over. “When I needed the comfort and solidarity of music the most, when I was the loneliest and the most scared I’d ever been, music showed up for me. And that changed the game for me. From then on I sought out and wrote mellower, sweeter, more authentic songs. That moment definitely reshaped my artistry.”
Inspired by this event, Calista Garcia penned “My Love, My Love, My Love,” to be released August 20, 2021. As a salve for our battered public psyche, the song manifests as a remedy for our times -- a ballad of love, comfort and hope. Reminiscent of James Taylor with hints of Smoky Robinson, “My Love, My Love, My Love” is an affirmation of support from one lover to another, professing “I’m gonna change the world for you”:
And tomorrow when the day begins
And the yellow morning sun shines on your skin
Your laugh will ring like a bell, your smile will reach your eyes,
All the blues you felt now painted into the sky
The chord progressions mirror the lyrics in that the keys modulate ever so subtly several times during the song, evoking the lover’s affirmations coming to fruition. The harmonies provide a vintage touch reminiscent of Karen Carpenter.
“My Love, My Love, My Love” is the first single off Calista Garcia’s upcoming six-song EP A Beautiful World, scheduled for release October 8, 2021. This project was co-produced by Calista and Buddy Speir at 38 North Studio in Falls Church VA, and was mixed by Grammy award-winning producer, Jim Scott, in his vintage-equipped Los Angeles studio.
The project is a follow-on to Calista’s debut EP Wild Woman which was self-released in April 2019 to much critical acclaim, garnering a nomination for “Best Roots/Country EP” in the 2020 Independent Music Awards, as well as multiple other nominations and awards. Based in Washington DC, Calista, a Takamine sponsored guitar artist is a 2021 Chris Austin Songwriting Finalist at upcoming Merlefest and is a 2021 “She Is the Music Foundation” Songwriting Fellow.
